RADIO EXTRACT ANALYSIS

Discussion

In this content, the presenters have several discussions with the audience about the topic of names. At the beginning, the presenters are talking amongst themselves about name choices and whether they like their name or not. As the audience, we discover that many parents have decided to name their children after significant figures within society (e.g. one presenter was named Emily due to her mother having a love for Charles Dickens.

Overall, the presenters throughout the entire radio show are enthusiastic, confident and well educated in terms of what they are saying. All of the presenters talked formally throughout the entire show, however some presenters may be considered more formal than others (e.g. when Gary was talking about the news, he was more formal than Emily when she was talking about names). The fact that everyone was formal is a benefit in terms of target audience, because in society today, the radio is aimed for the older generation, so having this formal element ensures that the target audience can fit the radio into their lifestyle/enjoy it.

In terms of the quality of the content, everything was professional and made me feel as though I was listening to the radio. The sweepers in particular impressed me the most because they helped me feel as though I was definitely listening to the radio. The fact that it was professional can help fit into the lifestyle of the older generation, making it a benefit in terms of target audience.

For the timing of the content, it was a total of 178 seconds - making it the longest segment within the entire radio show. Personally, I think that this amount of time was necessary due to the amount of information that they covered.

News/Travel

In these contents, the presenters are telling the audience news around the Cambridge area. In this segment, there are several topics which are covered such as Brexit, news about travel and an Egyptian Exhibition. Having these topics are beneficial in terms of target audience, because the older generation would find these topics more interesting compared to topics which are aimed for the younger generation (e.g. music).

Overall, the presenters throughout this segment are formal and well educated in terms of what they are talking about. The fact that it was formal and informative can help fit into the lifestyle of the older generation, making it a benefit in terms of target audience.

Also, the audience members which participated in the discussion were very friendly, clear in their speech and highly intelligent in terms of what they were talking about. For example, during the Exhibition, there is an interview between a worker from the Fitzwilliam museum and a presenter from the radio. She provided the audience key details about the Exhibition without talking too much.

In terms of the quality of the content, everything was professional and educated me very well. The audio was clean and there was no background noise which interrupted the interviews. This was good because it ensured that the audience can hear/understand everything which is being said.

For the timing of the content, it was a total of 60 seconds (News and travel combined) - making it a fairly short segment. Personally, I think that this amount of time is good because it shows that the radio doesn't want to bore the audience by blabbering too much about news which can be summarised but still informative.

Sweepers

In the show, there was a total of 4 sweepers which were all used to inform the audience about the area which the radio is presenting in/to advertise the radio.

Both presenters who were speaking in the sweepers were energetic and had a high level of confidence. The tone of their voices were soothing to listen to because it fitted with the music used and it overall made it seem like a radio show.

The quality of the sweepers were professional and the amount of time spent on this segment was 35 seconds in total, which is a reasonable time in my opinion, because it allows the flow of the show to be smooth and more like a radio.
